“Hickory Dickory dock, the mouse ran up the clock…”. This is the nursery rhythm that my elder boy keeps singing lately. His school is teaching the kids to recognize time currently and I think that is why this nursery rhythm comes into picture.
JY’s bento today was made based on this nursery rhythm. Last night before he went to bed, he asked if I could make him a Hickory Dickory dock bento. Just for fun I asked him how he will make a Hickory Dickory dock bento if he was to make one. To my surprised, he told me all the details including the ingredients to use!
This was what he listed out:
1. A round shape butter sandwich as the clock with seaweed as the numbers and the arms.
2. A sausage mouse with spaghetti for the whiskers and seaweed for the facial detail, and something for the tail (this was exactly how he mentioned it).
3. The mouse on top of the clock, and a dog below the clock (I wonder why the dog came into picture).
4. The phrase “Hickory Dickory dock” cut out from cheese.
All right, that saved me a lot of time to think of what I should do. Anyway, item 4 is definitely out as there won’t be enough space in the bento to accommodate that.
So that was how his bento looked like.
I made a simplified version of the clock with just the numbers 3, 6, 9 and 12 as I had to cut all these free hand.
I used the cute balloon string food pick for the tail of the mouse while the rest of the detail was just like what JY described.
As for the dog, I did a lazy job by using a cute doggie food pick on dried prunes.
To fill up the rest of the empty spaces in bento box, I put three skewers of boiled endamame.
I photographed the bento with the cute little plush kitten, and now I had everything – a mouse, a cat and a dog besides the clock!

Wow…your son is smart, able to give so much good ideas for his bento. Cannot look down at kids nowadays.
Cute and nice bento. You are perfect in free hand cutting…those numbers are perfect!
Emily Ng – Thank you Emily! But I still find the numbers differ in sizes.
Oh yes, he amazed me too! Kids nowadays are really smart!
Wow! Another amazing cutting! I reli salute u!
Yeapies – Thank you! How I wished I have the numbers puncher when I cut the numbers!
I’m also curious why your son requested a dog in this bento. Hmmmm….maybe he is a dog lover?? An interesting bento theme! You’re so pro in your free hand cutting! I wish I can acquire some of your creativity skills too.
food-4tots – Thank you. In fact I wish I can have your superb skills of cooking!
Oh yes, I have the same question mark in my head, why a dog? He requested to keep a pet dog few times before but I rejected due to his sensitive nose problem. Maybe that was the reason?
CUTE!…you have trained your son so well….he knows what to request (he knows his mommy can handle well) …more challenge for you. Waiting here to see more creative bentos
莎莎妈咪sab – Thank you! Maybe I shall just ask him to be the ‘designer’ everytime and list me how the bento should be, haha…but then I think he’ll request for sausages & butter sandwich all the time!
GOOD JOB JY~~ haha.. he seems to be supplying some ideas to your bento collection though.. but as for the dog, since when the logic changed? mouse is afraid of dog? where will the cat be then? cat afraid of mouse or dog afraid of cat? hahaha..JY, you are just so CUTE~~~ ^.^
波尼 – I think next time I can just asked him to be the ‘designer’ of the bento huh? Oh dear, you make my head spinned with all the logic!
not a bad idea about the ‘designer’.. another talent in this kid though.. ^.^
)
haha..i did spin you har? maybe when you have find out what stores in JY’s head, you’ll really spin! @.@
(pssst: still know the way to MV today?
波尼 – Oh yes, I think I better not trying to figure out what is in his head then yeah?
(I think to is ok, but back, I’m still spinning! Haha…)
The mouse is so adorable!!
mils – Thank you!
Wow I am speechless, that is so stinkin cute!!!
Steph – Thank you so much for your sweet comment! It really makes my day!
cute nursery rhyme bento! My boy has been singing songs taught at school too.. its fun that we can put it in the bento.
next time, will u do a humdy dumpty bento?
bobo – Oh yes, what a great idea of Humpty Dumpty! Shall try that one day! Thanks Florence!
you are really master in nori cutting..the numbers looks like a punch out to me..:)
how do you cut the round circles inside the number 6 and 9? looks perfect to me.
bobo – Thank you for your sweet comment Florence! I just fold into half the 6 & 9 at the circle part, then cut the circle out from the middle. Hope you get what I mean.
This bento match the nursery song, how cool! Plus all the animals gather around the clock make the bento looks so fun
Lia Chen – Now I feel nursery songs can be a good theme for bento isn’t it?
This just blows me away. You are one talented lady, ya know that?
kelly – Thank you so much for your sweet comment. It really makes my day!
Hickory Dickory “Dog”???…
how’d u make the whiskers?… raw spaghetti?
superfrog80 – Hey, Shawn right?
Oh yeah, now you gave me the clue, maybe that is where the ‘dog’ came into picture!
Yup, the whiskers were raw spaghetti. My boy is already used to eat bento so he knows to discard what need to be discard!
hehehee… harrow, Ms Goh!!…
luckily he’s not like me – i’d finish everything on the plate/box…
superfrog80 – So good to hear from you! Finishing up everything on the plate/box is a good habit yeah!
